About Pedal Peak District

Pedal Peak District is a £2.25 million project set up to:

  • encourage more people to cycle, particularly those who don’t at the moment or do so only occasionally.
  • promote regular cycling for fun, health, fitness and transport.
  • create a new cycle route from Bakewell to near Buxton which includes re-opening former railway tunnels that have been closed off to the public since the 1960s.
  • promote better public transport links to cycling routes to help reduce car use and carbon emissions.

The project is managed by the Peak District National Park Authority and is funded by the Department for Transport

The Peak District National Park was chosen for its extensive network of trails, cycle hire centres and attractive scenery within easy reach of big towns and cities.

The first phase of the project has now been completed.

It had two main parts:

  1. Repairing and re-opening  the former Monsal Trail railway tunnels
  2. Encouraging more people to take up cycling in the Peak District National Park by organising bike training courses, bike maintenance courses and cycling events. A separate website called Pedal Peak District has been created where people can log their cycling journeys and get information and tips on cycling.

Funding is now being sought from the Department for Transport for a second phase, which it is hoped can eventually see a cycling route created linking Bakewell, Buxton and Matlock . The project would also require planning permission for the route before any further work could take place.

A charitable company called Peak Cycle Links has been created by local residents to try and make this vision a reality.
