About Me

I have lived and worked in the National Park all of my life.

I was elected to Bakewell Town Council in 1974. I have been the Mayor of Bakewell three times and was first appointed to the Peak District National Park Authority in 1992.

Since 1983 I have been the Derbyshire Dales District Councillor for Bakewell. I am currently the council's chairman and have been chairman of the Northern Area Forum for the last eight years. I have previously been chairman of the Northern Planning Committee.

I was first elected as a Derbyshire County Councillor for Bakewell in 1997 and have held a wide range of roles.

Locally I am involved in many organisations and serve as President of both Bakewell’s St John Ambulance branch and the Bakewell District Club for the Disabled, and as Vice-president of the Royal British Legion Ladies section.

I am also Chairman of Bakewell Community Interest group, Chairman of Derbyshire Dales Community Forum, a member of Bakewell Responders and a former governor on three schools in the town having chairman of the infants’ school.

What the national park means to me

It is a special place to live and work. I would hate to see it become a museum - it has to be a living national park and grow so that local people - especially young families - can live here and so that we can protect all the jobs, especially in farming and quarrying.

Membership of outside bodies

I represent the Peak District National Park Authority on the following outside bodies:

  • Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership Rural Forum
  • Land Managers’ Forum

In my role as a councillor I am:

  • Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council.
  • Chairman of the county council’s “Places” Improvement and Scrutiny Committee
  • Chairman of the county council’s Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE).
  • Member of the county council’s Health and Adult Care Improvement and Scrutiny Committee.
